Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM)
Soft tissue treatment helps break down scar tissue and fascial restrictions with the use of stainless steel instruments and therapeutic exercises commonly used by Chiropractors. These instruments can be made of a dense surgical steel or hard plastic. The weight of a dense surgical steel tool allows for pressure to be placed on the area in question with less force. As the tool moves back and forth, the feeling of grittiness and/or adhesions may be present. These changes are between the fibers of the fascia and muscle which can cause pain, inflammation and restriction. The beveled edge of these tools allows for stripping the muscles and breaking up adhesions of the fascia, helping the tissue heal correctly. Stumpff Chiropractic in Plantation uses these tools along with other modalities to help decrease pain for patients.
Treatment can be provided in static positions or in dynamic positions that replicate the pain a patient is feeling. For example, patients with rotator cuff injuries can mimic the pain by lifting over head while instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization occurs.
